The Adopt a Plot idea developed “organically” and suddenly in conversations between David F. and Janet O. Randy F. joined in to map out the property. On Monday, August 22, Pastor Sharon and David had briefly discussed how much the grounds need work. Then Tuesday David mentioned this to Janet in a phone call, and that got her creative brain spinning. She was scheduled to be liturgist Sunday August 28, and she was looking for ideas about what to say for the offertory talk. She said getting something like this going could give her a good topic. Janet’s enthusiasm was infectious.
The next organic piece was this: David went to church Wednesday to see what maps we might have to make things easier to illustrate. Coincidentally, Cydne and Kurt (office manager & custodian) had recently cleaned out a storage area and discovered a collection of schematics for the church grounds from 2003.
Thursday, Janet, Randy and David prepared a large map - thanks to Cydne’s computer wizardry - and they walked the grounds to create reasonably sized plots.
On Sunday all but one of the plots were adopted! We hoped for good response, but we were overwhelmed with the enthusiasm. Monday morning, there were already folks (Plotters) working on their spaces, and Tuesday saw at least four more teams out.
We have garden label stakes with the names of Plotters. Look for them.
We plan to have a gardening celebration - pizza - in late October or November.
Bottom line: four days of work and a SPIRITED, spirit-lead concept got us here.
We all agree that we need experienced pruners to do the trimming. And yet, as Dorothy reports, she and Roger, Rob & Laurie H., and Andy Y. and many others have put a lot of time into gardening, so they deserve great credit as well.
Below is a link to a map showing which plots are accounted for. Don’t let the fact that someone is already in an area deter you. Maybe you can develop a good Plotting relationship with someone else.
Two plotters already at work
