A message from our talented organist/pianist, Judy Widrig:
Bach's 48 Preludes and Fugues from the Well Tempered Clavier represent one of the monumental achievements of keyboard writing. Thee two volumes are often called the pianist's "Old Testament," (with Beethoven's Piano Sonatas being the "New Testament.")
Bach wrote a prelude and fugue in every key, major and minor, to celebrate a new way of tuning keyboard instruments. He so enjoyed this process that he then wrote a second collection which is the "Well Tempered Clavier, Vol 2." The works are musically and technically challenging and rewarding to learn. My project is to play all 48 pieces for Prelude music over several years. As of 2/9/25, I have played 8 so far!
