A Humble Faith: At the Beginning of Spring
I had to Google it, but apparently the exact moment of Equinox is when the Equator of the Earth passes through the mid-plane of the sun; when the earth is neither tilted towards nor away from the sun. I thought to Google it because at the Equinox Potluck I attended last night, someone proclaimed the moment and nobody was quite sure what the moment meant!
As I write to you on this first full day of Spring, I’m awaiting the full unfurling of spring’s peculiar riot, but also the sacred days of Holy Week next week. Maybe Lent has been a super meaningful time for you; maybe the worship services have really landed, maybe your Lenten practice has been super energizing, maybe God’s stirring you in really obvious ways. But maybe not.
One of the things I love about my newfound understanding of how equinox works is that there is a precise moment, but it’s a really hard one to notice. I assume you at least need a fancy telescope or an astronomer friend. And in our terrain we are catching up with changes that are even harder to notice.
When did I get halfway to being a generous person? When did I get halfway to forgiving myself? When did I get halfway to really loving my neighbor? When did I get halfway to coming out? Halfway to falling in love? To being the parent I’m called to be? To saying yes to the Spirit?
I don’t know the answers to any of those questions. I don’t even know which of those things have happened yet, or quite where I am on most of those journeys. But the mystery of Holy Week invites me again: to join in the sacred journey of Jesus and see where I’m led this time around. To be halfway to healing, or at least one palm procession deeper into the mystery.
You coming or what?
