Touched to Conditions By a Hum
Spring comes on the World –
I sight the Aprils –
Hueless to me until thou come
As, till the Bee
Blossoms stand negative,
Touched to Conditions
By a Hum
-Emily Dickinson
What is the hum that touches you to blossoming?
Who is the “thou” you greet, the one that inspires and enlivens you to new life?
What is the flame that, when it sparks in your life, lights the fire of your passions?
In less flowery language:
What are you passionate about?
When do you feel most alive?
What is the hum that begins the natural chain reaction from “standing a negative bloom” – pleasant but self-contained – to pollination and renewal and creative expression of self?
What is the hum?
Part of this poem’s power lies in the “thou” remaining open to our interpretation. We don’t know if Ms. Dickinson is speaking to a lover, to God, to the return of green or a favored creature or to some intangible pleasure—and it doesn’t matter. Through her words we are invited to claim whatever it is that, as the bee, inspires in us the ability to become creative.
Creativity is an aspect of the Divine. Creativity is a giving of ourselves. We choose how we as individuals will share who we are with the world—with our families, friends, communities… The ripples move ever outward from ourselves.
As we move into Spring—noting creative renewal and resurrection all around us—I invite you to meditate on your own hum. Note the vibrations when they come. Mark the sound and energy. What exactly is it? Where does it come from? Where does it lead you? How does it inspire you to share yourself? Cherish the passions and joys. And use them!
Blessings,
Sharon
